What if everything goes right?

Let’s have courageous, playful conversations about the kinds of futures we love living in.

Open your imagination Aug 28-29 and join a group of people setting aside cynicism, self-doubt, and perfectionism to ponder what exists in a future we love.

There are so many different ideas on what will bring forth the best possible future for humanity: better primary school education? Better transportation infrastructure? Slowing down AI development? Less social media? But it can feel overwhelming to speak to any of them…

Today, you might hold your ideas back for fear of being told you’re an idiot. Offending someone. Starting controversy. Maybe you just don’t want to add to the cesspool of hot takes online. Maybe you feel like the problems we’re facing are so big that you can’t solve any of them, or that your opinion doesn’t matter. What can any of us do to make any of this real, anyway?

Perhaps you’re right. Even so, we think you have something to add. You don’t have to talk about nuclear disarmament, or have a plan for peace in the Middle East to feel into what it’s like to exist in a future you love. What about the experience of falling in love? What about making music? What about spending time with friends and family? What does a future you love contain—what’s the same, and what’s different?

Being optimistic can feel like a big risk. Are we setting ourselves up for disappointment? For endless unfulfilled yearning? For being seen as naive?

We’re inviting those of you who are called to take that risk with us. We see this kind of collective sense-making opening up new possibilities, not only for a better future, but for a better now.

A future we love includes improving the way important conversations online. On August 28-29 you’re invited to be a part of that. UpTrust is hosting on online conference- “A Future You Love.” A forum-style conference where you’re invited to make a claim about what makes a better future. To step outside of what “would” or “could” be and inhabit the positive reality, look back, and tell us about it.

What is UpTrust?

UpTrust is creating a new online space for social sensemaking. It’s a site to

  • bring your unfinished perspectives

  • get less sensationalized updates on collective conversations

  • find collaborators across ideologies

  • read the most credible perspectives from folks that you both agree and disagree with

  • find others like you who want to have tough conversations in a generative way

  • contribute to a better future

Be a featured writer

Yes, you! We want to highlight your future claim as part of the line up. You’ll share a “stage” with both well-known and emerging writers. We care about your ideas, not your audience.

This is an asynchronous, online conference meaning folks will come and go as they please. As a featured writer, you’ll schedule a time to post your “future claim” so we can share a schedule with other attendees.

  1. Apply to be a featured writer to post your “future take” on UpTrust. We’ll ask for a short title or gist when you schedule. You’ll choose a post window and we’ll let you know if there are any issues!

  2. Draft your future take however you’d like, be it a sentence, essay, or something in between. It’s just a hope, wish, or picture of tomorrow you’d like to see. It doesn’t have to be polished or profound. Try finishing the sentence: “I imagine a future where…”

  3. Post at your scheduled time. You’ll get a calendar reminder to help you remember.

We’ll share a full schedule so others know when to check out your post and join the conversation.

Questions and Answers

  • Go to https://uptrusting.com/join-waitlist and join the waitlist.

We’ll send you an email when we let everyone on.

From there you can create an account, and join any conversation you want, or start your own. You get to be part of the new internet.

  • On this site, you’re rewarded for posting content that’s trustworthy and integrates different points of view.

Content that’s meant to stir up outrage or just be a jerk gets less attention.

Be honest. Be empathetic. Generally be a good person.

  • What do you love? What would you want to see preserved or enhanced in the future?

For this event, a Future Claim comes from your personal imagination of a future world you love being a part of. What’s it like? Whether or not you feel the world is headed that way or if it could given our current course.

This can be far future or in a couple of years. It can be a bold idea, a quiet hope, a real fear, or something you think more people should talk about.

You don’t need to be an expert. You don’t need to be a sci-fi writer. You can come with an unfinished idea or something you’re pondering.

    Some examples:

    • “I love how everyone speaks openly about their mystical experiences of oneness with God, and we help each other integrate these awakenings with our unresolved psychological problems.”

    • “Jobs, family, and status don’t define us in the future I love. Instead, we’re defined by our character transformations.”

    • “We will treat grief as a kind of activism. Crying in public is revered again, like when you read about women beating their breasts in ancient societies.”

    • “I’ll see dozens of micro-homeschool pods as I walk around my neighborhood. Each running different experiments with different models of education.”

Not sure where to start? Try imagining yourself 5, 10, 20 or 50+ years from now, and finish one of these sentences:

    • “I’m so happy because ___.”

    • “Wow, I can’t believe [this incredible thing actually happened]”

    • “It’s so amazing that [x problem was solved by y]

    • “It’s so amazing that everyone now has [z thing that belonged to only the super lucky (rich, or dedicated)]”

Future thing not working for you? Try these:

    • “I hope someday we stop pretending that ___.”

    • “If we keep going this way, ___ will happen.”

    • “I believe we could build a future where ___.”

Then ask yourself: Why do I believe that? What’s at the heart of it?

    That’s your Future Take.
